They Will Kill You

Habt ihr euch mal gefragt, wie das uneheliche Kind von Dario Argentos Suspiria und Gareth Evans' The Raid aussehen würde? Ich auch nicht - aber jetzt weiß ich es.

They Will Kill You ist eine humorvolle Metzelorgie, die alle Regler auf Elf dreht. Kernige One-Liner, saftige Blutfontänen, zerplatzende Köpfe und abgetrennte Gliedmaßen fliegen und spratzen nur so durch knallbunte Räumlichkeiten.

Prämisse: Protagonistin Asia muss sich durch ein riesiges Gebäude unsterblicher Satanisten hacken, um ihre kleine Schwester zu retten. Dabei ist sich der Film seines absurden Settings stets bewusst und spielt humorvoll damit.

Story und Hintergründe sind dabei Nebensache. Das ist aber okay, denn der Film will weniger eine tolle Geschichte erzählen und setzt viel mehr auf aufwendige Sets, überstilsiertes Design, eindrucksvolle Gore-Effekte und durchinszenierte Action. Und das gelingt wunderbar. Durch die gute Kamerarbeit wird die Action gut eingefangen. Die einfallsreichen Einstellungen und Bildkompositionen machen Spaß und werten They Will Kill You qualitativ auf. Das Gore-Level ist ordentlich aufgedreht und die praktischen Effekte überzeugen.

Neben Argento und The Raid sind die Einflüsse von Tarantino, dem Hongkong-Actionkino, Sam Raimi und klassischen Samurai-Filmen schwer zu übersehen. Auch die musikalische Untermalung ist entsprechend vielseitig. Zu goblinesken Giallo-Sounds gesellen sich wuchtige Hip-Hop-Beats, rotzige Punk-, Rock- und Alternative- Tracks, epische Orchestermusik sowie mit E-Gitarren angereicherte Spaghetti-Western-Nummern, die unverkennbar an Morricone erinnern. Eine passende und unterhaltsame Mischung.

Leider wird das flotte Tempo des Films durch Rückblenden und Gespräche immer wieder unterbrochen. Dabei soll über die Motivation der Figuren aufgeklärt und ihre Hintergrundgeschichte beleuchtet werden. Das hätte es nicht gebraucht.

Aber in Summe ist They Will Kill You ein kurzweiliger Spaß zum Gehirn ausschalten. Dabei wird die Konkurrenz in Form von Ready Or Not 2 mit eimerweise Neon-Blut einfach weggewischt.

They Will Kill You is a gleeful splatterfest that turns every dial up to eleven. Tough one-liners, fountains of blood, exploding heads, and severed limbs fly through vividly colorful environments with reckless abandon.

The premise is simple: protagonist Asia must hack her way through a massive building filled with immortal Satanists in order to rescue her younger sister. The film is fully aware of how absurd this setup is and embraces it with a great sense of humor.

Story and backstory are largely beside the point. And that’s perfectly fine, because the film is far less interested in telling a compelling narrative than it is in delivering elaborate sets, hyper-stylized visuals, impressive gore effects, and meticulously staged action. Thankfully, it succeeds wonderfully. The cinematography captures the action beautifully, while creative camera setups and striking compositions elevate the film beyond pure spectacle. The gore level is cranked up high, and the practical effects are consistently convincing.

Beyond Argento and The Raid, the influences of Tarantino, Hong Kong action cinema, Sam Raimi, and classic samurai films are hard to miss. The soundtrack is equally eclectic. Alongside Goblin-esque giallo sounds, we get pounding hip-hop beats, gritty punk and alternative tracks, epic orchestral passages, and spaghetti-western-inspired pieces enriched with electric guitars that unmistakably evoke Morricone. It all comes together into an entertaining and surprisingly cohesive mix.

Unfortunately, the film’s brisk pace is repeatedly interrupted by flashbacks and dialogue scenes intended to explain character motivations and flesh out their backstories. None of that was really necessary.

All in all, They Will Kill You is a highly entertaining switch-your-brain-off good time. Along the way, it washes away the competition in the form of Ready or Not 2 under buckets of neon-colored blood.
