★★☆☆☆ (2/5)

(English review below)

Im Grunde ist alles hier sehr more of the same. Schauspieler machen ihren Job ganz gut.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

I’d say Whistle is to Final Destination what Smile is to It Follows. You can recognize a lot from the intentional or unintentional influences, and it adds a few more or less groundbreaking ideas to expand on the concept.

I think Smile does a better job here and gave me more chills and scares. Here and there, I’m also reminded of Talk to Me—simply because we’re also dealing with a gadget that triggers the curse. But here, too, Whistle comes up short in my opinion.

Whistle barely generated any suspense or terror for me. This may also be because the explanation of exactly what’s going on is easy to figure out and is also explained quite straightforwardly in the film relatively early on. In my view, this strips the film of its mysterious terror, and the focus quickly shifts to rationally figuring out how to win the “game” and escape the curse.

Basically, everything here is very standard. The actors do their jobs quite well. Unfortunately, there’s a heavy reliance on CGI, which usually takes away from the immersion for me. However, it’s worth mentioning that two CGI kills really pack a punch on the brutality scale. Those were fun on the gore side.

So, all that’s left to say is: If you are hungry for horror and if you can make your peace with something very standard and if you like the Final Destination concept, you can give this a watch. But you shouldn’t expect more.
