(English review below)

------------------------------------------

I can hardly believe Daniel Scheinert made this film just three years before Everything Everywhere All at Once.

The Death of Dick Long is a viciously dark, Fargo-esque crime comedy that demands a healthy appreciation for black humor and a high tolerance for second-hand embarrassment.

Pink Freud, a three-piece amateur band made up of men in their mid-thirties from a small, isolated Alabama backwater, parties a little too hard after rehearsal. By the end of the night, only two band members are left alive. They desperately try to cover up the death of their friend—and, more importantly, its cause, which I won't spoil here—while the equally incompetent local police attempt to solve the case.

The film leans much more toward a gritty crime thriller than a comedy. The cinematography is dark and naturally lit, with the camera staying close to the characters, creating a constantly unsettling atmosphere. Visually and tonally, I found myself thinking much more of True Detective Season One than of a traditional Hollywood comedy.

The film's unique vibe comes partly from its wonderfully eccentric characters, who reminded me a lot of Fargo—just with a distinctly redneck twist. But the actual cause of death is equally important. It's the kind of premise that separates those who can laugh at the absolutely tasteless from those who can't. The suspense comes both from the criminal investigation and from the overwhelming feeling of cringe. It's a compelling combination that can be genuinely stressful to watch.

The soundtrack features songs by Nickelback, Creed, 3 Doors Down and other bands that peaked around the turn of the millennium. Combined with the band's clothing style, it creates the strong impression of people who never really moved on from their youth.

Yet despite constantly poking fun at its characters' quirks, The Death of Dick Long takes both them and their emotions seriously. The absurd premise stands in stark contrast to the film's genuine realism and empathy, which I consider its greatest strength. Michael Abbott Jr. and Virginia Newcomb deliver outstanding performances, while Sarah Baker and Janelle Cochrane are equally enjoyable as the two local law enforcement officers. Thanks to their performances, I found myself feeling genuine sympathy for them despite the film's deeply uncomfortable atmosphere.

The film loses a bit of momentum in the middle and starts going around in circles narratively. Still, the protagonist's claustrophobic sense of dread remains intact and carries the film through these slower stretches.

In the end, The Death of Dick Long is highly recommended for anyone who enjoys pitch-black humor, painfully awkward situations and bold, delightfully bizarre indie films. If you're more into traditional comedies or romantic comedies, however, you should run from this.
