Strange Darling

"Presented in six chapters." Als dieser Satz eingeblendet wurde und der Film anschließend mit Kapitel 3 beginnt, musste ich tatsächlich kurz lachen. Das fasst mein größtes Problem mit Strange Darling ziemlich gut zusammen: Der Film möchte so unbedingt außergewöhnlich wirken, dass es einfach needy wirkt. Er trägt seine Arthouse-Leuchtreklame viel zu demonstrativ vor sich her.

Dabei funktioniert vieles richtig gut. Willa Fitzgerald trägt den Film mit einer starken Performance. Besonders die Motel-Szene, in der ihre Figur innerhalb weniger Augenblicke zwischen völlig unterschiedlichen emotionalen Zuständen wechselt, gehört für mich zu den absoluten Highlights. Auch Kyle Gallner überzeugt in ähnlichem Maße. Beide harmonieren hervorragend und sorgen dafür, dass man den Figuren trotz der bewusst fragmentierten Erzählweise gerne folgt.

Auch die Härte gefällt mir. Strange Darling scheut sich nicht davor, sehr brutal zu sein, driftet aber nie in Exploitation-Gefilde ab. Die Mischung aus Spannung, Gewalt, starken schauspielerischen Leistungen und dem unfreiwillig komischen Arthouse-Vorschlaghammer sorgt dafür, dass der Film über weite Strecken ausgesprochen unterhaltsam bleibt.

Gleichzeitig finde ich es schade, dass sich Strange Darling so sehr auf seine stilistischen Spielereien verlässt. Die nichtlineare Erzählweise wirkt auf mich eher wie ein Schrei nach Aufmerksamkeit als nach einem erzählerischen Nutzen. Zumal der Twist so vorhersehbar ist – gerade weil die Kapitelstruktur von Anfang an klar macht, dass es nicht so sein kann, wie es zu Beginn scheint. Da beißt sich der Film selbst in den Allerwertesten. Am Ende hatte ich sogar ein wenig den Eindruck, dass die betont kunstvolle Inszenierung davon ablenken soll, wie dünn das eigentliche Drehbuch letztlich ist.

Trotzdem hatte ich eine wirklich gute Zeit mit dem Film. Er ist hervorragend gespielt, atmosphärisch inszeniert und angenehm kompromisslos. Für mich reicht das zwar nicht für einen außergewöhnlichen Thriller, wohl aber für einen sehr unterhaltsamen Filmabend.

"Presented in six chapters." The moment that title card appeared and the film immediately jumped to Chapter 3, I actually laughed. It perfectly sums up my biggest issue with Strange Darling: the film is so desperate to feel unique that it comes across as a little needy. It wears its arthouse credentials far too proudly.

That said, a lot of things work really well. Willa Fitzgerald carries the film with a fantastic performance. The motel scene in particular, where her character shifts between completely different emotional states within moments, is easily one of the film's highlights. Kyle Gallner is just as impressive. The two have terrific chemistry, making it easy to stay invested in the characters despite the deliberately fragmented narrative.

I also really liked the film's brutality. Strange Darling isn't afraid to get viciously violent, yet it never slips into exploitation territory. The combination of suspense, graphic violence, strong performances, and its unintentionally hilarious arthouse sledgehammer approach keeps the film highly entertaining for most of its runtime.

At the same time, I think Strange Darling relies a little too heavily on its stylistic tricks. The non-linear narrative feels less like a meaningful storytelling device and more like a cry for attention. Especially since the twist is so predictable—largely because the chapter structure makes it obvious from the very beginning that things can't possibly be what they initially seem. In that regard, the film ends up shooting itself in the foot. By the end, I even had the impression that its deliberately artsy presentation was trying to distract from how thin the screenplay actually is.

Even so, I had a genuinely good time with the film. It's exceptionally well acted, atmospheric, and refreshingly uncompromising. That isn't enough for me to call it an exceptional thriller, but it's certainly enough to make it a very entertaining watch.
